Borussia Dortmund’s 2010/11 season at a glance - the youngest team ever to win the Bundesliga
With the youngest team around in the Bundesliga and a trophy drought extending to almost a decade, not even the most optimistic of Borussia Dortmund fans expected a title winning campaign, not even a title challenge for that matter.
Contrary to expectations, the Black Yellows had an outstanding 2010/11 campaign and the only thing that went against them was their manager, Jurgen Klopp’s broken glasses during the celebrations after a 3-1 win over then reigning champions, Bayern Munich,
at Allianz-Arena.
Dortmund didn’t make a perfect start to their sublime campaign and lost their very first game to Bayer Leverkusen at home. It was just a perfect kind of tonic for the Borussians, who took no time to bounce back from that 2-0 loss and inflicted a 3-1 defeat
on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfB-Stuttgart-c40879 in their very next game, and that too away from home. The team just required one game to get the momentum back and performed beyond expectations much to the surprise of their own fans.
Former champions Bayern Munich, at that stage, had already started sensing danger of losing their supremacy in the wake of some tremendous Dortmund performances. Klopp’s strategy of going all out against all teams bar none was at first criticized by the
club’s own higher officials but soon it started paying dividends with every passing game.
Players like Nuri Sahin, Mats Hummels and Mario Gotze were the standout performers for the young champions and the work load was evenly divided amongst the team members. Gotze regarded his full squad as one family and mentioned, "We're a team and we always
stick together. We're all there for one another. We're like a family."
The club maintained unity and discipline throughout the campaign but the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 support came from a massive crowd that travelled everywhere with the team. A fiercely loyal and vocal travelling support was often too hot to handle for other teams, inducing confidence
in the young team who proved to be a surprise package for most crazy lovers of the sport.
The Borussians hit top form around match day 10, which caused concerns in Munich and Leverkusen camps. Jurgen Klopp managed his team in the best possible manner as Dortmund continued their exhilarating campaign. The team had a staggering ten-point advantage
prior approaching New Year, and the young sensations were all set to cause a big upset in the Bundesliga history.
Since losing the first match of the season, Dortmund lost only four more games throughout the remaining campaign and were simply unbeatable at home. From 17 home games, the Black Yellows lost only once while playing at Signal Iduna Park, notching up 12 wins.
Their away form was also something to take note of as the team managed 11 wins on the road.
While the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Neven-Subotic-c27632 stood
firm throughout the campaign and the team as a whole let slip only 22 goals from 34 matches.
Dortmund went on to end their trophy drought but the only thing that the Borussians would have to work upon for the 2011/12 season is their conversion rate. The Black Yellows won the title but it is believed that the strikers squandered more than 50 clear
cut chances during the whole 2010/11 campaign.
Nevertheless, Borussia Dortmund created history by becoming the youngest ever team to win the Bundesliga and expectations are even higher going into the new campaign.
