Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze disappointed with Champions League exit
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has expressed his disappointment on the side’s exit from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday after the 3-2 loss to Olympique Marseille. The player admitted that the result against the French
side could have been better and that the performances in Europe were way below par. He rued missed chances in the fixture and is confident of returning back to form domestically.
Die Borussen were eliminated from Europe’s premier club competition this week as they lost their last group match against Marseille at home. The visitors scored three goals after the interval to win the match after going two goals
down.
Gotze revealed that he is extremely disappointed on being knocked-out of the competition and admitted that the displays in Europe were very poor and in complete contrast to the performances in the league. He stated that the team
could have easily gone to win the match but the players made some silly mistakes that cost the match.
“It's all the more bitter after this result, that's for sure. We started very well and quickly got ourselves 2-0 in front. Obviously it was unfortunate to concede a goal so close to half time. That kind of threw us off-track a
bit,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The German international played down reports that the team lacked experience for the highest stage and commented that it was just mistakes that led to the exit and claimed that nobody could doubt the ability the team has. The midfielder
now hopes to make up to the exit in Europe and wants to make an impressive comeback in the Bundesliga to reclaim the top spot from Bayern Munich.
“I don't think you can put these results down to a lack of experience. It may be that we just messed up in a few key situations, making unnecessary mistakes. And then there were the chances we had and didn't always put away, myself
included,” he concluded.
Borussia Dortmund managed to win just once in the six games played in the Champions League. They lost four and drew one to end up at the bottom of the table with four points.
