  1. Bose is c**p, and overpriced c**p at that.

Start with a good AVR, or audio-video receiver. Harman Kardon, Denon, or Onkyo are quality, mid priced brands. Whatever you get, make sure it is a "high current" amplifier.

Next you need speakers. There are a few Internet Direct speaker manufacturers that sell great sounding speakers at low prices. You can usually audition these speakers at home for 30 days and decide if you want to keep them.

I went with Ascend Acoustics CBM 170. They sound so sweet, and for only $348 per pair!

    But wait, there are others!

Well Jason, this is not a complete list, but it is a good place to start.

This is great quality sound at a discount price.

Also, Klipsch is not the best either. Stay away from the "Big Box" stores.

  2. That may be just jealousy.  Bose is very good audio equipment for the money, especially if you let _them_ set up and tune your gear for you.

I have had very good results from my Bose gear and would not trade it for any of the others that I have heard.

  3. http://www.whydoesmyhometheatersuck.com/...

Go to this site. It has a article on why Bose sucks. This site also has lots of other usefull info. Good luck on your choice.

  4. Glad to hear the almost universal ... to be positive shall we say ... "indifference" to Bose by knowledgeable audiophiles got through. To be a bit fair though I believe the general opinion is not so much Bose is c**p as that you can get much better performance for the money.

There are no "best" (or worst) brands for speakers ... they are all different and each has a place. There are literally hundreds of possible options, so you have to give more info. re your budget, purpose, preferences, etc. before anyone can provide useful input.

Klipsch make some good speakers but no manufacturer makes the best in all categories.

Even after focussing your needs a bit ("surround sound kit" isn't nearly enough) you will have to listen to the speakers since ONLY you can decide. Yes, use opinion and reviews to focus on a few possibilities, but it would not be a good idea to expect someone else to tell you what you need.

To give you a place to start consider the listing of recommended surround sound systems at various price levels and edit your question to focus it a bit.  A receiver to drive them is a second concern since there are not nearly the differences as there are in speakers.

    EDIT

To the "helpful" person who suggests people who don't like Bose can't afford them: I can only speak for myself, but not true (My Totem, Snell and Klipsch speakers might give you a clue). I don't like Bose because they prey on the gullible, use litigation to get their way, make mediocre equipment and charge an outrageous price for it. The manager of a Best Buy told me Bose spend over 40% of revenue on advertizing (including setting up "doctored" demos in stores). Furthermore you won't find a legitimate professional anywhere who will recommend Bose.

One of the problems with a site such as this is that almost everyone recommends what they own. I don't always succeed, but I try to provide advice based on facts that a reader can use to make their own decision.

Any response that simply recommends something without a rationale or credible third party support should be taken with a grain of salt.

  5. Bose's sound quality is suspect because, Bose makes sure their products cannot be auditioned in the same environment with competitve products.  Bose give no specifications for its products, and does not allow independent tests of their products by A/V magazines like every other audio manufacturer.  Clearly Bose has something to hide.

In the same price range of the Bose 321 system, look at Definitive Technology.  This speaker brand is available in the Magnolia section of Best Buy.  The Pro Cinema 800 series has been well reviewed and tested by many A/V magazines.  Definitive Technology is my recommendation, but figure out your budget, and go to different stores, and ask them to show you their best system within your budget.  Bring you own CDs/DVDs to demo.

    Good luck.

  6. I am sold on Klipsch but my 4yr old $500 Yamaha system puts Bose to shame.

  7. bose isnt c**p.. its just not compatible with anything except bose.... heh.

  8. bose is good but overpriced

  9. My guess is the people who say Bose is "c**p" probably can't afford Bose equipment and don't know what they are talking about. Now that being said I have both Bose systems, headphones, along with others, Sony, Samson and RCA. and if you get the correct system and set it up properly ie. speakers correct distance appart, correct cables. You don't have to spent $2000 that Bose commands to get great sound. Bose is one of the best don't let people tell you other wise. But if you can find a 7.1 system with an HDMI output and spend under a grand that would be the best way to go.
