He has a Dell 4600 (multi-media) computer and it doesn't have a firewire port. Can you tell me what exactly I need to download videos?

If I purchase a Cables Unlimited USB 2.0 and Firewire 1394a Cardbus Card ( http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00399622000P ), will I be able to download videos ? Do I need a firewire cable in addition to the Cardbus Card above? I don't have to "install" the Cardbus do I? You just insert it in the USB port right?

  1. A firewire to usb will not work for downloading video.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

  2. You need to install a firewire card to have a firewire port. USB will not work for DV transfer. That particular CardBus card will not work with that particular Dell because that Dell does not have a CardBus expansion slot.

    According to this

the 4600 does not have a PCI expansion slot - which is what you need to install a firewire port for a desktop...

Once a firewire port is properly installed, use the firewire cable to connect the camcorder DV port to the computer firewire port. Launch MovieMaker (or whatever vide editor) and with the camcorder in Play or VCR mode, you will "Capture" or "Import" the video.

Good luck. I don't think you will get there from here.
