Boston Athletics Association marks 125th Anniversary with three-race series beginning April 2012
Athletic achievements can be best celebrated by organizing more athletics events. This notion seems to be followed by the Boston Athletics Association (BAA) that is to mark its 125th Anniversary next year by organizing a three-race series.
However, instead of going for three marathon events, the organizers planned to go for shorter distances so as the celebrations can extend a chance to the ordinary citizens to mark their presence at the cherished meets.
The inauguration of the event will be marked by a 5km BAA distance Medley on April 15, 2012 that will be followed by a 10 km run on June 24.
Three months down the line, the association will observe the final event of the series that will be a BAA Half Marathon scheduled to kick off on October 7, 2012.
The Boston Athletics Association, being a rich athletics body, will dish out significant cash prizes for the winners of the series. In total, both male and female title holders of the respective events will bag $ 100,000 as prize money.
The scoring of the finishing time will be done in a unique way as the ultimate winner of the race will have to prevail with the lowest finishing time in all three races combined.
For instance, if a runner observes a finishing time of fourteen minutes in the first meet, hits the end line in twenty nine minutes in the second showdown and clocks one hour, four minute and thirty seconds in the half marathon contest, his or her finishing
time for the series will stand at one hour, forty seven minutes and thirty seconds in total.
The unique system of scoring has been introduced to not only interlink all three events, but also to keep the runners motivated throughout the competition.
Besides the hefty cash prizes, the organizers of the event believe in encouraging every athlete who completes all three races as all such runners will be rewarded with special commemorative medals besides the finishers’ medals for individual races.
While cherishing the announcement of the event, Thomas M. Menino, Boston's Mayor, said, “In 2012, the BAA Distance Medley will give Boston a series of races unique to the sport and is yet another way we are promoting our neighborhoods and our citizens. Together
with the BAA, we are encouraging health, fitness and an active lifestyle by providing inspirational opportunities in which anyone may participate”.
