Boston Bruins' forward Brad Marchand finally agree to two-year, $5 million deal -NHL offseason Update
Coming out of his three-year entry-level contract with Boston Bruins, it was a long offseason for forward player Brad Marchand, who after months of continuous negotiations, finally struck a two-year contract with the Stanley Cup winning team, worth an estimated
$5 million.
Boston Bruins general manager, Peter Chiarelli, and Brad Marchand made the announcement through a teleconference on Wednesday, September 14. By the tone of his voice, Marchand was obviously excited to have finally re-signed with his original draft team.
"It's a great fit for both of us. I'm happy with the term", Marchand said. "We talked about a little longer (deal), and I think that was just more about a little more security”.
The 23-year-old signed on with Boston during the 2008-2009 season after being drafted as the 71st overall pick during round-three of the 2006 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft.
After playing his first year with Providence Bruins, Boston’s minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL) in which he scored 59 points (18 goals, 41 assists) in 79 games played, Marchand was finally given a chance the following season.
During the 2009-2010 season, Marchand played 20 regular season matchups and managed to pot only one assist before returning back to the AHL. Last season, Marchand had the best year of his career by registering an impressive 41 point (21 goals, 20 assists)
record in 77 appearances.
Bruins GM, Peter Chiarelli, definitely agreed that his performance last season was a factor in him signing on to a big deal.
"He had a terrific year", Chiarelli said, "and terrific playoffs".
Since the teams’ main training camp is only a few days away from beginning, Marchand was optimistic of joining the team in their training whether he had a contract or not, but fortunately for the Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada native, he got what he had hoped
for throughout the offseason.
"From the get-go I never was going to miss a day of camp", Marchand said. "I never wanted that. I wanted to be here the first day. I wanted to show I wanted to be here and go through the whole camp with the guys and be a part of the team”.
Now on Friday, when the training camp kicks off, Marchand can give it his all without the tension of having yet to sign back on to the team.
