Boston Bruins' goalie Tim Thomas not to play 2012-2013 Regular Season -NHL Update
In a shocking move, Boston Bruins’ veteran goalie, Tim Thomas, has decided that he will not be taking part in the 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season and will rest instead after having a disappointing year which included an early ousting
from the playoffs.
Thomas was the talk around town after he single-handedly led Boston Bruins to their first Stanley Cup championship in over 40 years back in 2011, but when it came time to defend his prize, the veteran choked.
Despite ending the season after a final moment burst from the team at the second spot in the Eastern Conference with 102 points, Boston and Tim Thomas were eliminated by rookie goalie, Braden Holtby and the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of the quarterfinals.
There was rumour about Thomas wanting to take a year off, but no official notification until he posted it on his Facebook page on Sunday, June 3, 2012.
"From the earliest age I can remember, I've wanted to be a hockey player," Thomas wrote. "I've been blessed in my life to not only be able to live that dream, but to achieve more than I ever thought possible.”
Thomas did not add that he would be returning for the season after the next or whether he is retiring so nothing can be said on that aspect for the moment, but general manager, Peter Chiarelli, will have to think while taking that into consideration.
Bruins’ Tuukka Rask will be getting the task of being the starting goalie, something which he has wanted for the past few seasons, along with giving Anton Khudobin the position of backup.
"I almost have to operate under the assumption he isn't coming back," Chiarelli said. "I've had some discussions with Tim and he's told me that he wants to play in the Olympics the following year, so I'll have more discussions with him later on. But we've
got two very capable goalies in (Tuukka) Rask and (Anton) Khudobin, so I'd be more than satisfied if that's who we have to go with."
Boston Bruins are still hoping that Tim Thomas will change his mind when the next season is to start, but for now, the goalie should be counted out.
