Boston Bruins' owner Jeremy Jacobs affirms support for Tim Thomas' remarks -NHL Update
Barely anyone supported Tim Thomas over his protest in deciding not to attend the White House ceremony for the Stanley Cup champions, the Boston Bruins, but the veteran goalie can feel confident now as team owner, Jeremy Jacobs, affirmed that he stands behind
his views.
Thomas termed the federal government and both the major political parties in the United States to be “out of control” and working against the will of the people, which put him under intense heat from players as well as observers around the National Hockey
League (NHL).
Appearing for the first time since Thomas showed his stance on the issue, Jacobs further replied by saying that it was not the player he was behind, but the first amendment which is a fundamental right of free speech and thinking for everyone.
“Tim is a great hockey player,” said Jacobs, who was in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, for the NHL Board of Governors meeting during the All-Star Game Weekend. “He’s done his job very well for us, and I’m totally behind him. I don’t necessarily agree with his
political views, but that’s not what he does for me. And I’ve got to say this: While I don’t agree with it, I certainly feel he has the right to express himself as every American does, and he does a good job.”
Expressing his views while terming that not everyone would have like Thomas’ views whether they were made public or not, he further went on to state that there should be patience amongst everyone and the capacity to bear whatever one thinks.
Not taking into consideration Tim Thomas’ political views, Jacobs termed it to be his own personal decision, but the right to protest and freedom of speech was something no one could take away from him or criticise in such a manner that has been done over
the past few days.
Adding how Thomas is a crucial part of the Boston Bruins team, seeing that he almost single handed led the team to their first Stanley Cup in over 40 years, and having different political views is not something that will create distance between them.
