Boston Bruins Chris Kelly signs with HC Red Ice Team in Switzerland -NHL Lockout Update
Boston Bruins veteran centre player, Chris Kelly, has reportedly signed on with HC Red ice Martigny-Verbier-Entremont of the Swiss National League B of Switzerland and did it quite quietly with not much known in the media.
Boston has not seen many casualties due to the lockout up until now, except some top level players like Patrice Bergeron and Tyler Seguin being some of the Bruins to have made a decision early on in order to continue playing during the lockout. Chris Kelly
on the other hand, was one of the many players that decided to wait it out and see how the negotiations between the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association would play out.
After seeing that the lockout is just getting deeper and deeper, there is no telling when it will come to an end, forcing the star player to make a new place for himself in Switzerland.
Kelly is a 31-year-old native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was picked up by the Ottawa Senators in round-three of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft using their 94th pick and has almost nine seasons of playing experience under his belt. Kelly had his
best season last year with the Bruins as he potted 39 points (20 goals, 19 assists) in 82 games played and was also part of the Stanley Cup championship team in 2011.
The 2011 playoffs, in which the Boston Bruins won their first Stanley Cup in over 40 years was huge for Kelly as the veteran potted 13 points (5 goals, 8 assists) in 25 games played to lead the team and gather up a plus rating of 11.
In all, Chris Kelly has 569 regular season matchups under his belt with a total of 97 goals and 123 assists for 220 points along with 296 minutes in penalty time. He also has 68 playoff games on his career stats board for 29 points, 10 goals and 19 assists.
The Canadian forward is also under contract with the Boston Bruins, to a four-year, $12 million deal, which will make him an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2016 regular season.
