Boston Bruins’ veteran goalie Tim Thomas named Playoffs’ MVP & awarded Conn Smythe Trophy –NHL Update
It was Boston Bruins first Stanley Cup win in over 39 years and after making it to the finals last time in 1990, it was not about to give this chance up for anything. Its veteran goalie, Tim Thomas, remained solid in the net and was awarded the Conn Smythe
Trophy for his consistent performance throughout, not only the series, but the playoffs in whole.
Tim Thomas remained Bruins’ winning factor even when Bruins’ defensive or offensive end was having a bad time on the ice. He outplayed Vancouver’s goalie, Roberto Luongo, in every aspect and proved that he really is the best goalie in the National Hockey
League (NHL).
"It's quite an honor. I mean, the Stanley Cup is the biggest one, that's the one you're shooting for. But Conn Smythe is completely an honor", the 37-year-old goalie said. "I just sat down here and started to read some of the names on it. It's an honor to
be mentioned in the same Maple Leaf".
Thomas locked down Canucks throughout the Stanley Cup Finals to scoring only eight goals, that otherwise was one of the best offensive teams in the league.
Vancouver was the winner of the Presidents’ Trophy for having the best regular season and was regarded as the top prospects when entering the playoffs.
"Their goaltender was real tough to beat", Canucks’ coach, Alain Vigneault, said while talking about Thomas after the Game 7 loss. "The way they played in front of him was real tough to beat. We had some grade 'A' chances and we weren't able to score".
The 1994 NHL Entry Drafts pick is also up for nomination for the Vezina Trophy, which is awarded to the best goalie in the league, and is highly expected to win when the award is given out next week.
Thomas still has a good number of years left in him and winning this Stanley Cup will always be one of the most memorable in his career. His goaltending skills have made him the most in-demand goalie throughout the league and any team would be lucky to have
him.
