Boston Bruins’ centre and alternate captain Patrice Bergeron signs a contract with Swiss team
Patrice Bergeron, a professional ice hockey player from Canada and one of the top National Hockey League (NHL) players, who is also the alternate captain of the Boston Bruins, has decided to sign a contract with Switzerland league’s team HC Lugano.
The forward player, who has been representing Boston Bruins in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference for many years now, has moved to the Swiss Club only for the time being as there is no hockey being played in NHL because of a lockout.
HC Lugano is one of the best team’s in the Switzerland league as they have won the championship seven times and that was something that made Bergeron excited about playing for them and he could not turn down their offer. Though he had an offer from Finland
as well but he chose them because of their better history and better team.
According to Bergeron’s agent Kent Hughes, he could also have joined Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in Russia but he chose to travel less and join his former team-mate, Boston Bruins’ player and veteran centre Glen Metropolit. After getting his client’s
deal done on the Tuesday afternoon, Hughes said,
“Patrice wanted to keep his game in shape, and at the same time he was intrigued by the idea of getting to see a beautiful country. The offer from Finland was attractive, too, but all in all the Swiss experience just looked more appealing.’’
The 27-year-old centre would be looking to keep himself fit and in form during the NHL lockout as he has plenty of hockey left in him and would be looking to serve Boston Bruins once again like he has done before.
This is not the first time that he is leaving the team because of lockout as he experienced it before, just one year after getting selected 45th overall in the 2nd round of NHL Draft and making his NHL debut.
The L'Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec native had joined Boston’s affiliates Providence Bruins then and had made big impact and he would be looking to do same this time as well.
The 6-foot-2, 194 pounder has been very high scoring in NHL as he has played 537 games and scored 143 goals, 258 assists for a total of 401 points.
