Boston Bruins ease past Calgary Flames, 9-0 – NHL Recap
Calgary Flames might be regretting the decision to start the game with goalie, Leland Irving, who allowed six goals before being replaced as Boston Bruins ease past the Flames, 9-0, at the TD Garden on Thursday, January 5, 2012.
The Flames introduced Miikka Kiprusoff as Irving’s replacement in the second period, but that development came too little too late. Kiprusoff prevented 18 out of 21 shots from entering the goal, but there was no point of return.
"It was embarrassing," Flames’ captain, Jarome Iginla, admitted. "They played well, there's no question, but we got totally out-worked and out-competed. We were terrible tonight,"
The Bruins, who are leading the Northeast Division, dominated the game right from the start. All the three periods belonged entirely to them with their goalie, Tuukka Rask, providing complete support. He made 25 saves to give the Bruins an edge over the
Flames.
Apart from that, Nathan Horton and Patrice Bergeron scored two goals each to see their team through.
"I thought our team played real well tonight, obviously," Bruins head coach, Claude Julien, said. "For us it was a matter of coming out strong, establishing a lead early and then hopefully taking any hope away from them to even think it would be a game they
could win."
The Bruins signalled their threatening intentions early in the game. At 1:14, Bergeron and Benoit Pouliot assisted Tyler Seguin, who scored his 16th goal of the season.
A couple of minutes later, the Bruins extended their lead when Horton and David Krejci combined to set Milan Lucic up. Lucic registered his 14th goal of the season to give his team second goal of the game.
At 8:49, Krejci shined once again, this time in a more dominating role, and scored Bruins’ third goal of the game.
At the start of the second period, the Bruins continued to build on the momentum they gained earlier. Bergeron was the first one to score a goal in the period. His score was followed by a goal from Chris Kelly and two from Nathan Horton.
The Bruins could sense victory by the end of the second period when they were leading 7-0. However, their opponents did not see what was coming.
In the final period, the Flames were once again humiliated. The Bruins continued their onslaught and destroyed Flames’ hopes, if there were any!
At 5:49, Seguin and Pouliot assisted Bergeron, who stretched the lead to 8 goals after scoring his second goal of the game 11th of the season.
The nightmare for Flames ended with a goal by Daniel Paille.
It was fifth straight loss for the Flames, who are now going to take on Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Defender, Jay Bouwmeester, was clearly dejected after the disappointing defeat. He urged his teammates to perform better and end the losing streak.
