Boston Bruins edge Montreal Canadiens in intense shootout 4-3 -NHL Update
Both Montreal and Boston came into the Wednesday night matchup looking to rebound from a previous loss which resulted in embarrassment, but it was the Bruins that got the win as they edged Canadiens, 4-3, in a shootout at the sold-out Bell Centre in Montreal,
Quebec, Canada.
Boston had the lost their previous matchup against the top Eastern Conference team, New York Rangers, in a shocking 3-0 shutout of the Stanley Cup defenders while Montreal was definitely confused after not knowing how one of the lowest ranked team, Carolina
Hurricanes, dominated them 5-3.
Montreal put on a great show in the final period as Boston came with a 3-1 lead over the Canadiens.
Andrew Ference got the first of the night at the 17:09 mark of the opening period for his fifth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season after the match got intense as Ryan White and Adam McQuaid exchanged fists.
Mathieu Darche got Montreal right back in the game with his equalising shot in the opening minutes of the second while Canadiens were shorthanded with Lars Eller out from the first period due to a double minor penalty carrying over to the next.
Boston took control of the match from there on as Benoit Pouliot took the lead at 5:07 and Patrice Bergeron widened the gap at 14:33 with his power play goal, this time with Erik Cole out of the scene for interference with Bruins goalie, Tim Thomas.
Max Pacioretty brought Montreal back into the game at the 3:34 mark while Erik Cole gave the Canadiens the lifeline they needed as he intercepted a pass in their own end and fired it through Tim Thomas for the equaliser, forcing overtime.
Bruins’ star rookie, Tyler Seguin, made the game-winner during the shootout fight on their second attempt while Montreal failed on all three chances, giving the game to Boston.
The second place Boston Bruins have the next in Canada against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday while Montreal Canadiens will be looking to rebound at all costs as they playoff against the Buffalo Sabres on the same day.
