Boston Bruins finally get their 2011 Stanley Cup Rings, conclude championship celebration-NHL Update
It has been nearly been four months since Boston Bruins won their first Stanley Cup championship in over 40 years, but the celebration is nearly over as they finally received their rings during a private ceremony in Boston on Tuesday, October 10, 2011.
It was raining and the weather was cool as downtown Boston nearly came to a halt when an armoured vehicle stopped in the afternoon outside Boston Harbor Hotel as a number of people getting out with locked cases in their arms, only to find out that the coveted
Stanley Cup championship rings were being transported.
505 rings, made out of more than 300 diamonds in total, will be distributed amongst 505 people of the Boston Bruins organisation to conclude the championship celebration that the Eastern Conference club worked so hard for.
For many players like Shawn Thornton, who grew up in middle class homes, receiving such a prize is a dream come true for them.
"I mean, it's probably worth more than my parents made growing up", said Thornton, who grew up in Oshawa, Ontario. "So it's a … I'm kind of speechless. It's unbelievable how much they went out of their way to make sure that everyone was happy. It's great".
A number of players who have either retired or moved on to different teams during the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) offseason, will be receiving the prize, including Mark Recchi, Shane Hnidy, and Michael Ryder, who is now part of Dallas Stars.
"I knew this was going to be nice", retired winger Mark Recchi said about the diamond studded ring. "But what the Jacobs family did was absolutely amazing. It kind of blew me away. The thought that went into this and the little details is amazing".
The Boston Bruins championship ring is without a doubt, unlike any other. It has 100 diamonds on the top alone with a big “B” crested in the middle to signify Boston Bruins. The left side carries a diamond made Stanley Cup along with the years the franchise
has won the cup in the past up until now, all engraved in solid gold.
For Bruins, who kick of their Stanley Cup defending season on Thursday, October 6, against Philadelphia Flyers at home, these are the moments most, if not all players will probably never forget.
