Boston Bruins get captain Zdeno Chara back, outrun New York Islanders 6-3 -NHL Preseason Update
After a near escape from what could have been a season ending injury, Stanley Cup winners, Boston Bruins got back their captain, Zdeno Chara, who played it safe and smart leading his team to victory against New York Islanders, 6-3, in their home preseason
opener on Friday, September 23, at the near sold-out TD Garden.
It was during a practice session the team held on Tuesday in which Chara suffered a knee injury, later on termed to have been a contusion. He also missed their first preseason away game against Ottawa Senators on Wednesday, in which Boston suffered a 2-1
overtime loss.
"I'm feeling good", Chara said. "I'm very glad that it wasn't [serious]. Obviously, it's something that you're a little worried about when it does happen, but I was pleased that it wasn't as bad as it looked”.
Coming into the New York Islanders matchup on Friday, Chara had a plan in mind, which he executed during game-play assisting one of their six goals.
"Compete, work extremely hard and play simple", Chara said before the Friday matchup. "Obviously it's the first game so I'm not trying to do too much but I'm trying to find the timing and get that rust away. So nothing too complicated".
Dylan Reese shone brightly for New York as he scored two back-to-back goals during the first period and ended it by shocking the Bruins fans who were scared of seeing their team being devoured once again.
David Krejci put Boston on the scoreboard with his first in the second period during a power play opportunity. Patrice Bergeron tied up the match with another Boston goal nearly a minute later.
Islanders took the lead once again as Trevor Frischmon fired a shot past Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Tim Thomas, during the final moments of the second 20 minutes.
Bruins caught fire during the final round as Dennis Seidenberg, Brad Marchand, Johnny Boychuk and Rich Peverley scored four consecutive goals and ultimately captured the match with a monumental lead.
Both teams will remain busy over the weekend as New York Islanders are to face New Jersey Devils on Saturday, while Boston Bruins are up against Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.
