Boston Bruins hope for best out of new netminder Marty Turco-NHL News
Boston Bruins’ fresh signing, veteran netminder, 36-year-old Marty Turco, was well within the expectations of coach, Claude Julien, during his first appearance for practice, which was rather delayed as the player was on sidelines waiting for the official
confirmation, regarding clearance of waivers.
Turco wanted to enter the ice rack but had to wait for the word of confirmation from general manager, Peter Chiarelli, that he has cleared all the waivers to become eligible to play for Bruins.
The wait was rather surprising for the player but the delay caused more excitement for him when he finally appeared on the ice to practise for the first time along with his new teammates.
He said:
"It felt like I was 15 years old again, waiting to practice with the big boys. It was an even better feeling when I got the thumbs-up from Pete, so I got out there with some excitement in the blood. It's good to be back on the ice with some bright lights."
The goaltender had 35-minute training with the teammates and then spent another 30 minutes doing some individual workout.
Julian, who supervised the practice session, said he had seen enthusiasm and intensity, which was well within his expectations, and if given more opportunities, the netminder is expected to display brilliant performances in front of the net.
The coach said:
"It was his first day of practice and he hasn't been on the ice in a while, but his intensity and enthusiasm was there. He was working hard at feeling that puck and getting his timing, which is exactly what we would expect a goaltender who is practicing
for the first time in a while.”
Turco joined Bruins on a year-long deal worth $600,000 to replace injured netminder, Tuukka Rask, who is out of the team with a groin/abdominal injury he suffered on Saturday, March 03, 2012.
Before joining Burins, the player played in Austria’s top league and therefore became eligible for them. Had he joined any other team, it would have become difficult for him to clear the waivers.
According to the National Hockey League (NHL) rules, if a player joins a team’s reserve list from a reserve list of another team after the trade deadline, he is ineligible to play in the regular season and playoffs.
However, if a player joins reserve list of an NHL team from outside the league after the trade deadline, he is eligible to play in the regular season but not in playoffs.
Since Turco is coming from a European team, Bruins have confirmed him to be eligible to play for them for the rest of the season until their regular netminder, Rask, comes back.
The team, in the meantime, is thrilled about the participation of the new netminder, hoping that he would prove his worth, protecting the net in future.
