Boston Bruins rally in third to overtake New Jersey Devils 4-3 -NHL Match Update
Boston continued to stay perfect in the month of November with their sixth straight, making it the teams’ longest winning streak of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, overtaking the New Jersey Devils, 4-3, Tuesday night, at the sold-out TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
New Jersey had five power play opportunities throughout the contest but only managed to capitalise on one. Boston failed to take advantage of both which were given to them.
With another win, the Bruins moved up to the ninth number spot with 18 points, just below the Florida Panthers by three.
The start of the season might not have gone the way the Bruins wanted, but now it certainly seems they have gotten back on track in order to defend their Stanley Cup championship.
"There were a lot of distractions at the start of the year. Maybe we weren't really focused on doing the job of being the Stanley Cup champions", Boston’s, Brad Marchand, said. "Now we realize how hard we have to battle every night".
After a scoreless first period, David Clarkson remained hot by scoring his fifth of the season during a power play opportunity midway through the second period.
Chris Kelly answered back for the Bruins nearly four minutes later to force an intense third period with both teams tied, 1-1.
Brad Marchand potted another Boston goal, while New Jersey did not stay behind with Nick Palmieri’s second of the season, followed by another Bruins goal with Shawn Thornton inaugurating his scoring with his first.
Nick Palmieri levelled the match once again with less than 14 minutes to play in the final period, giving both teams more than enough time to take the lead.
With the end of the period approaching, Benoit Pouliot scored the game winner at the 16:59 mark and gave Boston the boost they need to take the matchup and another two valuable points.
"To our credit, we pushed back every time they got one", Devils coach, Peter DeBoer, said. "But we've got to be able to seize control and play with a little more composure. Overall this year we've done a pretty good job of that. But tonight we got exposed by a veteran team in the third".
Boston has another home game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday before taking off on a three-game road trip, while New Jersey Devils will continue to travel, next time to Buffalo to face the Sabres on Wednesday.
