Boston Bruins score five unanswered goals in the third period to hand Pittsburgh Penguins 7-4 loss
As every National Hockey League team knows, a strong effort will help you win a game. The Boston Bruins are known as a hard-working team that is laden with talented players, and their
efforts helped them rally to hand the equally talented Pittsburgh Penguins a 7-4 loss.
How it happened
Pittsburgh took an early lead when Arron Asham scored his first goal of the season 1:05 into the game. Boston got that one back at 8:31, when Mark Recchi notched a power play marker at
8:31. The Bruins took a 2-1 lead with a goal from Brad Marchand at 16:24, but the Penguins evened the score when Brooks Orpik’s wrist shot beat Tim Thomas at 16:58.
The second period saw the Penguins take control of the game. Chris Kunitz beat Brent Johnson for his fourth goal of the season at 15:44, while captain Sidney Crosby lit the lamp with a
power play tally at 19:37.
Down 4-2 going into the third period, the Bruins got a goal from Nathan Horton to cut into the home team’s lead at 3:49. Captain Zdeno Chara’s slap shot found the back of the net 15 seconds
later at 4:04 to tie the game at four goals apiece.
From that point onward, the Bruins dominated the game. Shawn Thornton got his third goal of the season at 12:40, and was followed by Blake Wheeler at 16:13. Milan Lucic added an empty-netter
at 19:34 to complete the rally and give the visitors a big 7-4 victory.
Goaltender Tim Thomas has been amazing in the Bruins’ net as of late, and he earned his eighth straight win by making some great saves on the Penguins’ shooters and keeping his team in
the game.
“Obviously, ideally we don’t want to put ourselves in the situations where we’ve got to come back like that,” Thomas told reporters after the game. “But if we’re in (that situation) we
know we’re not out of it.”
Crosby admitted that his team made some big mistakes that ultimately led to the Bruins’ five-goal outburst.
“We made big mistakes (in the third); that basically was what it was. It’s not like we gave them a ton of chances, but the ones we did were big ones, and they capitalized on them all.
We got into playing some pretty risky hockey, and we paid for it.”
The Bruins will return home to face the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, 11 November, while the Penguins will do battle with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday, 12 November.
