Boston Bruins sign Milan Lucic to three-year extension -NHL Update
The Boston Bruins made a favourable move on Saturday, September 15, 2012, as one of the leading teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) and winners of the 2011 Stanley Cup championship, re-signed power forward, Milan Lucic to a three-year contract extension.
Exact financial details of the contract are yet to be known officially, but according to insider sources have termed the deal to be worth between $16-18 million, with an annual salary cap hit of $6 million. The new contract will be keeping him locked on
to the club till the 2015-2016 regular season comes to an end and it is yet to be determined whether he will end up as a restricted or unrestricted free agent.
Lucic was drafted by the Boston Bruins back in 2006 NHL Entry Draft as the 50th overall selection in the second round. The native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, was seen t be one of the players of the Boston club that just might decide
to change sides this offseason but luckily for the team, it did not go that way.
Boston Bruins general manager, Peter Chiarelli, made the signing official through an announcement.
"Part of my job is to plan for this team within the context and within the parameters of the league, the league rules and the CBA," Chiarelli said after the Seguin signing earlier this week. "I just feel that we have flexibility with some of the guys coming
up and it doesn't mean we won't sign those players later on but I just feel we've placed more of an importance on getting some of these (younger) guys under contract. We talk openly about the second contract problem and we're trying to fix it. But I try and
do my job and I try and move forward and these are some of the core players I am trying to lock up."
Lucic has played a total of 359 games in the major league up until now and has 212 points (90 goals, 122 assists) and 525 minutes in penalty time, along with 62 playoff games played and 15 goals, 20 assists there.
