Boston Bruins snap Ottawa Senators six-game winning streak 5-3 -NHL Match Update
Boston made sure that after a very disappointing first month of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, the Bruins made sure that they had a better start, which they did by snapping Ottawa’s six-game winning streak and beating the Senators, 5-3, at the sold-out TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, on Tuesday night, November 1, 2011.
Ottawa had word so hard to make the fourth number spot in the Eastern Conference but had a near perfect run in the season obliterated by a team that stands last in the conference with only eight points and a record of 4-7-0.
Keeping their effort consistent and regular throughout the 60 minute contest, Boston forward, Chris Kelly, was thrilled that it paid off.
"We were dumping the puck well, retrieving the puck well. I thought that you just could tell we were getting better and better every shift that we did that", said Chris Kelly, who had a goal and an assist. "I thought for the most part that was the most consistent effort that we've had so far this year".
Nick Foligno scored his third of the season to kick of the scoring during the opening period. He was closely answered by Milan Lucic during a power play as Sergei Gonchar was penalised with a two-minute minor for hooking.
Stephane Da Costa added the tie-breaker exactly 16 seconds after Lucic to allow Ottawa to take the lead once again.
Boston dominated the next two periods, which ultimately decided the Senators fate. Patrice Bergeron and Chris Kelly scored two straight for the 2011 Stanley Cup champions nearly 14 minutes apart to secure a third period lead.
Jared Cowen inaugurated his scoring of the season 5:04 into the third, giving the Canadian visitors hope of a comeback with the score level, but Johnny Boychuk and Daniel Paille scored two more for Boston during the next two minutes, finalising the contest.
"We definitely had the puck the most that we've had it all year, at least that's what it felt like", veteran Boston goalie, Tim Thomas, said. "We had it in their end and we just had our feet moving".
Boston plays their next contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, while Senators will stay in Ottawa for the next three starting off with the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.
