Boston Bruins stay hot with 6-0 win over New York Islanders -NHL Match Update
Boston continued their best winning streak of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) while taking their eighth win straight to stay perfect in the month of November while shutting out the New York Islanders, 6-0, on Saturday night, November 19, 2011, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, United States.
The Bruins veteran goalie, Tim Thomas, stayed perfect in the net by blocking all 23 shots taken on his net by the Islanders, while New York was busy shuffling between their goaltenders, Rick DiPietro and Anders Nilsson.
"The only way we could get ourselves back in the race was to get on a bit of a streak here," Bruins coach, Claude Julien said. "Somehow, we've got to keep it going because it doesn't matter how many games we've won so far. We're still hanging on to the last playoff spot and we've got to get ourselves in better position than that."
Despite all their wins, Boston’s slow start to the regular season is catching up with them since they still stand at the seventh position with 22 points in the Eastern Conference.
In order to catch up, they will have to continue winning if the Bruins want a repeat of their 2010-2011 Stanley Cup winning season.
Patrice Bergeron opened the scoring with the nights first at the 7:08 mark in the inaugural period followed by Nathan Horton during a power play opportunity after New York gave their second straight penalty.
Chris Kelly got another breakaway and potted their third straight goal unassisted with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.
After a scoreless second period, heading into the third period was tough on the Islanders since they were down by three, but Boston added to their woes by adding another three in a row with Andrew Ference opening his scoring midway through while Chris Kelly adding another nearly two minutes later and captain, Zdeno Chara, potting his second at the 18:15 mark.
"It's hard to get a shutout in this league," Thomas said. "When you have a big lead in the third period, the human tendency is to let up."I did the best I could to be ready when they got their chances."
