Boston Bruins thrash Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2: NHL Play-off Recap
David Krejci lit the lamp by scoring the game-winning goal in the extra session to lift the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 2 of Eastern Conference semi-final series, at Wells Fargo Centre on Monday night.
Chris Kelly and Brad Marchand both found the back of the net in regulation time for Boston, which got a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series and will return home for the next two games with Game 3 set for Wednesday. Tim Thomas turned away 52 shots in the
winning effort.
James van Riemsdyk hit the net twice for Philadelphia, which fell to 2-4 at home in these play-offs. Brian Boucher gave up all three goals on 35 shots. He left in the second period due an injury but came back in the final period. Sergei Bobrovsky turned
aside all six shots he faced.
The first goal of the game came just 29 seconds into the opening period, when a 2-on-1 break for the Flyers saw Claude Giroux throw a broken pass to the left side of the net, where van Riemsdyk jammed the puck home for 1-0 lead.
Van Riemsdyk struck again for the second goal on a power-play just a bit over nine minutes later, when he redirected Kimmo Timonen’s shot into the net for a two-goal advantage.
Boston, though, removed the pressure by scoring the next two goals and levelled the game at 2-2.
The first one came with just a little over seven minutes left in the first period, when Tomas Kaberle ripped a snap-shot from the right circle to the net, but it was saved. Michael Ryder then tipped the rebound that popped out and a charging Kelly buried
home that rebound to make it one goal game, 2-1.
Bruins finally pulled an equaliser about 1 ½ minutes later, when Patrice Bergeron passed the puck from the low right circle to the slot, where Marchand fired a wrist shot past Boucher.
In the latter stages of the middle session, Thomas stopped Nikolay Zherdev's shot with his left pad. Moments later, Bruins got a chance to take lead, but Milan Lucic hit a backhanded shot off the left post with the net wide open.
Thomas stopped eight shots while Boucher and Bobrovsky combined to save 13 shots to keep the second period scoreless.
The Flyers then got two power-plays in the last period and banged 22 shots on net. But Thomas was up to the task and stopped all of them while Boucher turned away seven shots to keep third period goalless and extra session.
The Bruins then took 14 minutes into the overtime to seal the win at 3-2. It happened so when Philadelphia's defenseman, Braydon Coburn, controlled the puck behind his net and tried to unleash a shot, but Nathan Horton did not let it to go out. He slipped
it from the top of the right circle to the slot, where Krejci blasted a one-timed shot that looked to hit the back pipe. The goal was confirmed after a video review.
