Boston Bruins thrash Pittsburgh Penguins 6-1 to take 2-0 Lead - NHL Eastern Conference Finals 2013
Boston is inches away from getting another chance to bring home the Stanley Cup for the second time since 2011 after the Bruins thrashed the Pittsburgh Penguins, 6-1, at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh had the first two games at home but amazingly, the Boston Bruins came into the 2013 National Hockey League (NHL) Eastern Conference Finals with a mindset to dominate. Boston blanked the Penguins in
a 3-0 shutout during Game 1 and now played even better to lead 2-0 with a huge 6-1 win.
The Bruins are definitely feeling extremely confident of how they have been playing in the series this far but they are hoping to keep their momentum going. Getting overconfident now would be a dire mistake because
Pittsburgh is a team that can bounce back any moment.
"You can't be satisfied with what you've done," said Boston forward Milan Lucic. "It's a big two wins, but two wins is just two wins. There's still a long way to go and they have more than enough character in
that room to fight their way back."
Boston took over the game right into the first period, as Brad Marchand scored unassisted 28 seconds in while Nathan Horton, David Krejci and Marchand scored again, making it 4-1 by the end of the first 20 minutes.
Brandon Sutter was the only one to score for Pittsburgh throughout the match.
After a scoreless second period, Bruins shined again, with Patrice Bergeron and Johnny Boychuk firing two more in the opening and closing seconds of the third period, giving Pittsburgh no hope of a comeback whatsoever.
"We got down 3-0, I don't think there was a lot of fault in those three goals by the goaltender," Pittsburgh head coach, Dan Bylsma, said. "So it's tough to evaluate given the breakdowns and the type of scoring
chances that they scored on for both goalies."
Boston had just two more shots on the opposing net as compared to Pittsburgh but Tuukka Rask managed to stay strong throughout by blocking 26 of 27.
"I think our line's success has come with just keeping things simple and playing straight line hockey," Lucic added. "That's what we need to continue doing to be successful."
Game 3 between Bruins and Penguins is on Wednesday at the TD Garden in Boston.
