Boston Bruins top Steven Stamkos and Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 -NHL Update
Zdeno Chara was the man of the match with his three assists as Boston Bruins tore apart Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-2, on Tuesday night, March 27, 2012, at the sold-out TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
Steven Stamkos, the Lightning’s leading scorer, potted two goals to raise his record for the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season to an impressive 55 now, but failed to top Boston Bruins.
Tampa Bay was coming into the matchup on a three-game winning streak making a final playoff push for the postseason but a break in the momentum could cost heavily for the struggling team.
It was a 2-2 game in the third and final period of regulation as Stamkos and Shawn Thornton scored for their teams in the opener and Dennis Seidenberg added another for Boston in round-two followed by Stamkos’ equaliser 5:46 into the last.
Boston broke loose and fired off three straight by Benoit Pouliot, Brad Marchand and Rich Peverley, taking the match in the final 10 minutes of game-play remaining on the clock.
Giving up in the final minutes of the game cost Tampa Bay the crucial two points, this has now put them in a definite position to be ousted for good.
"(Roloson) kept us in the game," said Tampa Bay forward Martin St. Louis. "We had opportunities, obviously, we hit the post there, and then it’s a 3-3 game. You turn around and then it’s 4-2. It was a much closer game I felt than the result. Obviously we
got outshot pretty bad, they are a tough team to play against especially in their barn. They get the match-ups they want. They are a very disciplined team. You have to give credit where it's due. They played a good game, but we still had a chance there. We
were close, but not close enough."
Boston Bruins will be aiming for a fourth straight victory once they host Washington Capitals on Thursday while Tampa Bay Lightning, without a doubt, will be giving it their all in the next against New Jersey Devils on the same day.
Tampa Bay has six games remaining on their schedule, but there is still no telling what the end result might be.
