Boston Bruins wanted to sign goaltender Tuukka Rask for a longer term –NHL Rumour Update
At the start of this, as soon as 2012 free agency opened, Boston Bruins wasted no time to sign their goaltender Tuukka Rask as they signed him on 1st July for one-year in a deal which was worth $3.5 million.
Signing this one year contract means that the duration of Tuukka’s contracts is getting decreased with the time as he had signed a three-year entry-level contract in 2007 and then two-year contract in 2010. But the amount on the contract has been on rise
as it was 2,550,000 for three years in first contract and 2,500,000 for two years in second contract.
But time period getting decreased at the contracts is something of Bruins’ concern as they wanted to sign him for a longer period. The Finland’s goalie has already been there at Bruins side for a long time and presently with a desperate need of a goalie
which they can have for a long term Tuukka is by far the best choice. He already has got four years of NHL experience behind him and he is very young at the age of 25 which means he has a lot to offer.
One reason behind signing him for just one year is that Rask’s career has been affected many times because of injuries and there has not been a season in which injuries allowed him to play more than 45 games. Rask would surely be looking to have a good season
and would be hoping for it to be injury free and it may earn him a long term contract, like one Cory Schneider did.
Rask was originally drafted 21st overall in the 2005 NHL draft by Toronto Maple Leafs but was later traded to Boston Bruins in 2006 in exchange of goaltender Andrew Raycroft.
Rask will be replacing Tim Thomas as team’s starting goalie and when general manager of Boston Bruins, Peter Chiarelli was asked about just one year contract given to team’s leading goaltender, Chiarelli told that they tried to give him the one but they
had to compromise. Chiarelli who turns 48 on the 5th of the August said,
“A compromise,’’ Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli told the newspaper about the one-year deal for Rask, who is projected as this season’s No. 1. “We tried to go longer in term, but . . . ’
Rask has maintained an excellent record ever since he is playing NHL and he was also goaltender of the Finland hockey team that won bronze medal in 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship.
