Boston Bruins wins 2011 Stanley Cup Final against Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 by 4-0 –NHL Updates
Boston Bruins has won its sixth Stanley Cup in the franchise’s history and for the first time in 39 years as it annihilated and shutout Vancouver Canucks, 4-0, in the final game of the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Finals’ series at the sold-out
Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Wednesday, June 15th.
Boston’s goalie, Tim Thomas, proved that he was the best in the league without any doubt as he became the fourth player in NHL’s history to have shutout a team in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and the first to do it at the opponent’s home.
Thomas made 37 brilliant saves for his second shutout of the series and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his MVP performance throughout the season.
"I think I went even further than I thought", Thomas said. "I never envisioned three Game 7s in one playoff season and still being able to come out on top. .I was scared, I won't lie. I had nerves yesterday and today, and I faked it as best as I could, and
I faked it all the way to the Stanley Cup".
The 18,000 plus crowd and millions of Canucks fans all over Canada and America remained in a state of shock throughout as Vancouver’s goalie, Roberto Luongo, once again chocked and let the puck slid through him four times as he made only 17 saves on 20 attempts.
Patrice Bergeron opened up the scoring, late in the first period, when he was narrowed by Brad Marchand after he cleanly cleared a Vancouver’s defenseman for a quick pass as Bergeron’s wrist shot sent the puck in through Luongo.
Brad Marchand scored a goal when Daniel Sedin bumped in Luongo on the right side giving Marchand a chance to wrap around the left side and slide in the puck to extend the lead to 2-0, 12:13 into the second period.
Boston’s captain, Zdeno Chara, was booked nearly two minutes later and was sent to the benches for interference which gave Vancouver its first power-play advantage.
Bergeron scored his second of the night and sixth of the playoffs as he fired the puck past Luongo, shorthanded and ended the period 3-0.
"Their goaltender was real tough to beat", Vancouver’s coach, Alain Vigneault, said. "The way they played in front of him was real tough to beat. We had some Grade A chances, and we were unable to score".
Marchand added his second of the night on an empty net in the third period with less than three minutes remaining and finalised the game for Boston to take home the Stanley Cup.
Along with the Canadian fans that have not seen a Stanley Cup since 1993 and Canucks fans in 40 years, next season will bring another chance for them but until then, Boston Bruins is the one who have the right to celebrate this time.
