Boston Celtics awarded Oklahoma City Thunder’s 2013 second round draft pick over Jeff Green dispute – NBA Update

The NBA has awarded Boston Celtics a second round pick in the 2013 NBA draft that belonged to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The award came after the Celtics had complained about the Jeff Green trade from back in 2011.

The NBA’s official website carried a statement in this regard.

“As part of a ruling in a trade disclosure dispute between the Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder, NBA Commissioner David Stern on Tuesday awarded the Celtics a 2013 second-round draft pick held by the Thunder.”

Jeff Green was part of the trade that saw Kendrick Perkins move to Oklahoma City Thunder. The forward played with the Celtics for some of the 2010-2011 NBA season but did not feature at all in the 2011-2012 edition.

Before the season began a heart problem was detected which forced Green to go under the knife, thus meaning he would sit out the complete 2011-2012 season. The Celtics complained to the NBA with their options severely restricted after Green’s injury.

David Stern thus looked into the matter and gave the pick to Celtics as compensation after ruling that information was withheld regarding Green before the trade. Stern exonerated OKC from the blame but it’s been suggested that the team’s cardiologist was
aware of Jeff’s condition and he did not pass on the information to Boston.

According to NBA rules, information pertaining to injuries has to be shared between teams before a trade is made. The Celtics lost Green for a complete year and were thus adjudged to deserve some compensation.

Green was pencilled for a key role in Boston, where the management saw him as a future successor to team captain Paul Pierce. That was the reason he was brought in after sacrificing Kendrick Perkins, someone very popular within the locker room.

The player is now out of a contract in the summer and it is believed he will re-sign with the Celtics and play a vital role in their rebuilding process the next season. Boston are expected to lose Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen this summer as both veterans
are out of contract and could move on.
