Delonte West breaks right wrist, could miss entire regular season
Boston Celtics guard Delonte West broke his right wrist on Wednesday 24 November and the hard-nosed guard could be out for the rest of the regular season.
West, who has averaged 6.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in five games for the Celtics this season, sustained the injury when he had an awkward fall after a left-handed layup in their 89-83 win
over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday 24 November at the TD Garden in Boston.
The former St. Joseph's standout is in danger of missing the rest of the regular season, but Celtics head coach Doc Rivers
is still hoping that West would recover in time for their expected long and gruelling play-off run this season.
Shaquille O’Neal, on the other hand, believes that West would recover faster than expected because he knows that the six-year veteran guard is a tough player, having been through different
injuries in his entire career. O’Neal and West played last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“I'm not a doctor, but I'm going to say he's probably going to be out three months,” said O’Neal. “Luckily it's in his non-shooting hand and he's a tough kid, he'll probably want to come
back next week and play. But it will probably be three months, right after the All-Star break, everybody will be back. Kendrick Perkins will be back, West will be back, and we will be ready to go.”
West, who has only played five games for the Celtics after missing the team’s first ten games this season due to a 10-game suspension, also had a broken wrist in the 2008-09 when he was still
with the Cavaliers that sidelined him for 16 games.
Without West, the Celtics would need to make another adjustment until starting point guard Rajon Rondo recovers from his hamstring injury.
“It's tough losing Delonte,” said Celtics forward Kevin Garnett. “It's tough losing anybody, but just seeing this transition and where he's at and the work he's put in. And then having to
be responsible and sit down for a minute due to suspension, come back and give us a huge lift, especially with Rondo out, and then to lose him, it's tough.”
