Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo is going back to school; Stealing for a cause – NBA Update
Ever since the lockout was enforced on 1st July, many NBA players have been in the loop for an overseas move to either the European or Asian leagues. With Deron Williams already destined to play in Turkey and Kobe in
discussion with the Besiktas Executives, everyone seems to be trying to figure things out for themselves.
One man though has a totally different path in mind. Boston Celtics’ point guard Rajon Rondo has declared that he is considering retuning to college, given that no new collective bargaining agreement is reached and the upcoming
NBA season is abandoned.
Rondo was enrolled in the University of Kentucky on a full sports scholarship in 2004, until he signed up for the 2006 NBA drafts and left college at the end of his sophomore year. He is now seriously taking into account the completion
of his undergraduate degree.
As it currently stands, Rondo completed 60 units while he was in university, and has only 40 units left to earn his college degree. It is believed that Rondo might want to coach at the college level one day and to do that; he needs
to complete his undergraduate degree.
This news has also prompted Boston to start planning for the worst case scenario. If Rondo goes back to college and the NBA season gets abandoned, the Celtics will not face any real issues. However, if Rondo goes back and the NBA
season kicks off, the Boston Celtics might have a tough job replacing the impeccable point guard.
Last season, Rondo managed to rack up 10.7 points per game, 11.2 assists per game and 4.4 rebounds per game to mark his contribution for the Boston Celtics.
Apart from the speculation of Rondo’s return to college, he has also been in the news for a very noble reason.
Over the past 5 years, Rajon Rondo has built a solid reputation as a thief (ball snatcher) on the basketball court. In the last season alone, the C’s swingman has garnered a staggering total of 153 steals. Although those numbers
are impressive if left to stand on their own, it has emerged each steal that Rondo made was for a noble cause.
Last year, Red Bull had sponsored an event by the name of ‘Boston’s Got Wings’, under which five basketball courts in five different parks were to be renovated. The incentive for Rondo was that, for every steal that he made during
the 2010-2011 season, $500 would go to the revamping of those basketball courts.
Rondo was present at the ‘Malcolm X’ park on Tuesday, where the sponsored event reached its culmination. The 153 steals that Rondo managed last season, amounted to a total of $76,500 being available for the restructuring of the
courts.
Now there is one man, who his putting his talents to good use.
