Boston Celtics reserve forward Glen Davis looking at free agency – NBA Update
Boston Celtics reserve forward Glen Davis has declared that he will be interested in courting offers from other teams once the free agency begins. The Boston Celtics power forward has not renewed his contract as of yet and his
decision to wait and see what’s on offer in the free agency has not come as much of a surprise.
Glen Davis was part of the Boston Celtics unit that won the NBA World Championship back in 2008. Davis played an important part coming off the bench. However, the battle hardened front man failed to live up to expectations last
season, especially in the playoffs.
Glen”Baby face” Davis was not as productive as he would have wanted to be. Often acting as the backup to the aging legend Kevin Garnett, Davis played around 29 minutes per game in the regular season. He managed 11.7 points and
5.4 rebounds on average during that time.
His numbers fell drastically in the playoffs as the player failed to get going against the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat. He managed just 4.9 points per game on 39 percent shooting from the field.
When recently asked where he would like to be playing next season, Davis had this to say,
“My choice is what’s best for my family and career. That’s what I concentrate on. I love being here in Boston. But if it’s not going to benefit me and my family, I’ll pick up (and play elsewhere).”
“That’s my concern. That’s the only thing I’m focused on now; my family’s well-being and my career as a player … what situation is going to help Glen Davis be Glen Davis.”
It’s not clear what that situation might be. Davis has the opportunity to play alongside future Hall of Famers at the Boston Celtics. It is a team that helped him excel in the past and he would be hard pressed to find better teammates.
There is no clear reason for Davis to leave the Boston Celtic, apart maybe from his relationship with the coach. Doc Rivers, the head coach of the Boston Celtics, and Glen Davis have not always seen eye to eye. With Rivers now
tied down to the Celtics for another 5 years, Davis might decide to look elsewhere.
However, the fact remains that despite having an NBA World Championship ring, Davis is a backup forward rather than a starting option. How much money another team would be willing to pay him, especially in light of his poor playoffs,
is anyone’s guess.
It can’t be too much more than what the Celtics have to offer. In the end everyone’s hands could be tied due to the new CBA, Collective Bargaining Agreement, which is expected to introduce a hard salary cap and lower wages.
