Boston Celtics user their mid-level exception to sign Jason Terry - NBA Update
The Boston Celtics have finally agreed to use their mid-level exception to bring in free agent Jason Terry - their key signing this summer.
Both parties had agreed to a three year deal worth $15 million early in the off season; however the Celtics were trying their best to materialize a sign and trade with the Dallas Mavericks. An official announcement of the deal
is still pending and can expected as early as Wednesday.
Boston had agreed with Terry around two weeks ago but had been looking to convince Dallas in making a sign and trade deal for the veteran in order for them to be able to retain their mid-level chip, which they could have used to
bring in another player in the off-season.
However that did not turn out to be the case and the situation now limits the Celtics to go over the luxury tax line if they are to sign more players.
Had Boston been able to convince Dallas, they were would have most likely used their mid-level exception to bring in Mayo, a player they had been pursuit of along with several others in the off season.
The former Memphis Grizzlies guard however was also on the Mavericks radar, and after a disappointing off season in which they lost out on Deron Williams, Jason Kidd and Terry, the sign and trade would have hampered Dallas’s efforts
to salvage a strong roster. Mayo is now a Maverick and will play alongside Darren Collison in the backcourt there.
At the moment, Boston are looking to add depth to their back court following the departure of Ray Allen to Miami Heat. They are not sure about the health status of Avery Bradley who is going through the rehabilitation after having
gone through a second shoulder surgery last month.
Having used their mid-level chip to secure the signature of Terry leaves them with only limited possibilities in the market. They are now only left with the option of using their bi-annual exception or offering minimum contract
to any new players. Courtney Lee for one certainly goes out of the picture as far as the Beantown franchise is concerned.
