Boston Celtics veteran Ray Allen interested in joining Miami Heat – NBA Update
After Miami Heat lifted their second NBA Championship in franchise history last Thursday, several players would have wanted to join a team which has the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh present among their ranks.
Now according to recent reports, Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics, who will be a free agent over the summer, is interested in joining Miami Heat. The Heat can only offer him a $3million contract per year and given the amount of tax issues, this is the best
they can do according to “taxpayer’s mid-level”.
Even though a star player like Allen will be attracting a lot of intriguing offers over the summer, considering where he would have the best chance at collecting a ring, Miami offer a much better prospect.
From Miami’s point of view, luring in Allen could be very beneficial for them if they want to continue the way they performed in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. With Mike Miller considering a possible retirement, Heat`s best hope to bring wide spread shooting
on floor would be to bring in NBA`s all time leading shooter from long range.
Nevertheless even if Miller opts to choose retirement, given the amount of tax issues Miami are currently in, offering a $3million contract to Allen is going to be very expensive for them. Plus, once the repeater tax starts applying from 2014, Heat are looking
at a tax of worth $20 million, easily.
There is still no assurance of whether Pat Riley would see bringing in Allen to play alongside the big three worth the money. Even if he thinks it to be the case, there is no guarantee of the 16 year veteran staying fit for a whole season with the ongoing
ankle issues and ‘bonespurs’.
However despite being injury prone in recent times, the repertoire of being the best three point shooter in the league is bound to attract interesting offers for Allen.
Other teams who would be lining up for his signature over the summer include the likes of Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and his present team, Celtics who would be hopeful to keep him in Boston.
