Boston College’s head coach Jerry York just one win short of becoming coach with most wins
Jerry York, a professional ice hockey head coach, who is currently coach of the Boston College’s Men’s Hockey Team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), needs just one more win to become the coach with the most wins in the history of the
NCAA.
The 67-year-old head coach of the college side is right on his way to making history and would have a chance to equal the previous record of Ron Mason, which was 924 overall wins as a head coach. He could have equalled that in the previous game but unfortunately
his side lost the game and he would be made to wait a little more.
They were up against their arch rivals and it would have been a very memorable moment for the veteran coach to get this against Boston University but the rivals stood up to take the challenge and stopped him for getting the record for the time being.
Talking to NHL.com, York clarified that record is not on his mind and they have not been discussing it for the whole week. Their main aim is to beat their opponents and they have set their eyes only on that target, as he said,
"We haven't discussed it [the record] all week. We're focused on our archrival at BU. It's a great rivalry."
Mike Cavanaugh, the assistant coach of York since last 17 years tells that when the rival team’s coach Parker was offered the opportunity to become the head coach of Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL), his coach was asked if he would want
his rival to leave the team. But York did not want it, as he wanted to compete against the Boston University’s coach. Cavanaugh said,
"Jerry, in a very respectful way said, 'No, I want him to stay. I want to see if we can measure up to BU. At the time, they were the program to emulate. And they happened to be our rival."
York has won five NCAA championships, four of which have come with Boston College and he had won one of them with Bowling Green.
