Boston Mayor Thomas Menino expresses desire to host an All-Star Game: NBA Update
The Boston city Mayor Thomas Menino has expressed his desire to host an All-Star game. Despite being one the most powerful team on the NBA circuit for decades, the city of Boston has not hosted All-Star game for almost thirty-seven
years.
Talking to a local news paper, Menino said, “We haven’t had it since ’64 and I think we’re ready for it, we have new ownership, new enthusiasm, and the fan base out here for it, and I just think we have the facility and everything
ready to go. I hope that the NBA makes the decision in the near future to bring the All-Star Game to our city. The Celtics would have to be the applicant for it, and as a city, I would endorse the idea, As a city, I would endorse the idea of bringing it here
with the Convention Center folks, get all the entities in our city working together to make sure the All-Star Game is a first-class game that people participate in and neighbours could participate.”
The All Star game of 1964 was won by the Eastern Conference. Both teams were equally talented but the Eastern Conference led by Bill Russell, Sam Jones and Tommy Heinsohn of the Celtics eventually outclassed the classy Western
Conference team that included Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor and Don Ohl.
Bringing the All-Star game into the Boston however would be a tough task. Firstly, the Celtics management has to file a formal proposal to host an NBA All-Star game with a strong financial commitment to host such a huge game. Secondly,
it is upto the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) officials to decide the venue after every examining proposal deeply.
Last but not the least, the league always tries to give the hosting rights to warm cities and the Celtics’ cold February weather could be another hurdle for them to bring the All Star in their backyard.
However, even with all the hindrances, Boston does have a positive, which comes in the form of a diehard basketball fan base. With their team holding onto the greatest legacy in NBA, the people of Boston own the game and that can
pretty much overpower all the odds in the way of an All-Star game in Boston.
