Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs still hesitant to hire manager – MLB News
Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs have interviewed many candidates, most of them are same, but both clubs are still unable to reach any final decision, while Theo Epstein’s compensation plan is still pending.
As the speculation are revolving around in the baseball circles about the prospective candidate for either team, the Red Sox might think to take the first step in hiring, for they still have to decide the compensation plan for Theo Epstein to make him free
to be the president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs. On deciding on compensation plan, the Red Sox will allow Theo Epstein to miss the final year of his contract.
Red Sox GM Ben Cherington however refused all the speculations. When asked to comment on the Cubs’ decision to postpone the hiring process, Cherington said. “No.”
He further added. "We will keep the manager issue separate. As I said before, the right person to be manager for the Red Sox is not necessarily the right person to be manager of the Cubs. They are different (organizations) with different challenges. We have
talked to some of the same people."
Red Sox and the Cubs had an interview session with the Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting coach Dale Sveum, but now both clubs have decided to meet the possible candidate for another time. According to the sources, the meeting will be informal.
"That's one possibility," Cherington said. "There's no secret that there's a bit of a disagreement between the two teams on what the compensation should be. Theo and I talked today.”
Theo Epstein has left the club on October 21 after the September-disaster, creating difficulties for the newly hired general manager Ben Cherington. He interviewed five candidates for the position in a two week period.
Among the shortlisted candidates included the Philadelphia Phillies’ bench coach Pete Mackanin, Boston Red Sox’ ex-base coach Dale Sveum, Cleveland Indians’ bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach Dave Martinez. There is no time limit when
the possible candidate will be announced, commented an official from the Red Sox front office.
