Boston Red Sox, Theo Epstein compensation talks extended for a week – MLB News
Since the ex-manager of the Boston Red Sox, Theo Epstein has gone to the Chicago Cubs all news sources have moved their insiders behind both teams to get a scoop.
However, the Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington, who was appointed a week earlier in place of Theo, has unveiled the news that the Red Sox and the Cubs have been granted seven more days to decide on the compensation for Epstein’s move to Chicago.
Against the expectations of the reporters, Cherington stated that the decision has been made after mutual consensus as both teams agreed to have a minimum of one more week.
"We're going to have a little more time to work it out,'' Cherington said.”I am not sure exactly how much, at least a week, I would guess.''
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig had commented last week that he will intervene to solve the matter if both teams do not reach any decision until November 1, but the extension was granted to avoid any unfair decision.
After the Red Sox had a humiliating month of September, Epstein left the club and joined Chicago Cubs as a president of baseball operations. Epstein, who joined the Red Sox in 2002 and led the club into two World Series, was alleged on the poor performance
that forced the Red Sox out of the World Series journey. Red Sox had a 7-20 record in September while Theo was GM. He has one year left of his contract as GM with Boston but the dejected manager moved to the Cubs. Cherington was promoted in his place by the
Red Sox front office.
"There are not a lot of precedents, on the executive -- there are not a lot of managerial precedents, either, as far as compensation is concerned, but there are even fewer on the executive side,'' Cherington said.
Cherington stated that there was already an understanding that the Red Sox will get a significant amount as compensation if Theo decided to leave the club anytime during his contract. The problem however lies with the meaning of the word significant. Cherington
made it clear that the ownership were not expecting Theo to open the door and leave the club.
