Boston Red Sox Ben Cherington faces challenging start – MLB News
After joining the Boston Red Sox as a General Manager, Ben Cherington will be looking to make some rapid decisions to align his team. Ben will have a lot of work to do ranging from assessing the quality of players to appointing a new manager. The start of
his tenure will be full of strong decisions, as the club has to reassess their deals with free agents David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon.
The major decision might be about Carl Crawford, who was hired last year on a 142-million-dollar contract. As Crawford has made only 56 RBIs and 11 home-runs with a .255 batting average in 130 games, Ben will be looking to assemble him for the up-coming
season.
Cherington was one of the strongest proponents of singing Carl last season as he said it in his interview after the appointment.
“I pitched hard for that because I believe in him and I believe in him the same amount now that I did then. This guy has been an impact player on both sides of the ball for a lot of years in this league. He had a down year. He admitted that and he took full
responsibility for it."
In his effort to encourage the player for an upcoming season, Cherington announced his possible visit to Crawford sometime during the off-season. Cherington has an ambition to take the player back into his original form in 2012.
"We need to find out if there are some things that we can do to help him fully transition to Boston," Cherington said.
Ben will also be looking to make a decision about the empty spot of assistant GM. Amateur scouting and current vice president of player development Mike Hazen is being considered as a strong contender for the spot.
Cherington announced that the club might have a series of announcements on the front office and some of them will include promotions. The Red Sox has a very talented and professional staff that can easily handle more responsibility according to Cherington.
It will be interesting to see what changes Cherington brings to the Red Sox and what type of an impact he will have on this talented club.
