Boston Red Sox Ben Cherington interviews Gene Lamont for managerial job – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox interviewed their fifth candidate for the vacant position of manager. On Saturday, in Boston, the franchise general manager Ben Cherington had a long eight hour meeting with the Detroit Tigers’ third-base coach Gene Lamont.
After a series of interviews of candidates from different franchises, Cherington felt more comfortable with Lamont than the four he interviewed before. The whole scenario depicted that Lamont, the 64-year-old candidate could be announced as new manager.
The hint of a decision however has not been given to the media neither by Cherington nor by Lamont despite the fact that Cherington considered the meeting a success.
"Real well," Cherington said. "Some of the candidates I've had a preexisting relationship with, but I didn't with Gene."
Lamont has also been the part of different Minor League clubs since he retired from the sport in 1977. He spent 13 years at the big league level as a player. Twelve of his total playing seasons were with the Detroit Tigers and remaining one was with the
Atlanta Braves.
"I've been at it a long time," he said. "Sometimes that's good. Sometimes that's bad. I've been in baseball since '65, of course not all of it managing, but I'd like to think I've seen most things."
He has also been the part of the Red Sox in 2001 as the third base coach under the management of Jimy Williams and then under Joe Kerrigan. It would also add value to his resume.
Besides Lamont, Cherington also interviewed, the Philadelphia Phillies’ bench coach Mackanin, Cleveland Indians’ bench Coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Toronto Blue Jays’ first-base coach Torey Lovullo and Milwaukee Brewers’ hitting Coach Dale Sveum. All of these
players were hopeful of their selection, but the Red Sox front office has not reached a decision yet.
It will be interesting to see which candidate the Red Sox choose and what impact they might have on the team for the 2012 season. The Red Sox will be looking to select just the right candidate that can bring some consistency and professionalism to their
dug-out.
