Boston Red Sox: Keeping an eye on Magglio Ordonez

The winter meetings may be over but Theo Epstein of the Boston Red Sox is far from done. It wasn’t a surprise to see the General Manager make an impact this week. However one could not have foretold the measure of impact that was going to be translated during
the meetings.
The club was disappointingly close to a wild card berth last season. It was eventually skimmed out of position by the New York Yankees. It was, nevertheless, no surprise to see the team rebound in the off season with major signings that would reshape winter,
altogether.
The team started with the acquisition of Adrian Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres. He, particularly, was not shy of claiming his goal for the coming season as he taunted the Yankees. Then, Theo Epstein followed his first breakthrough with another one. He
signed on Carl Crawford to a 7 year deal, worth $142 million. The two stars, now part of the Red Sox team, are a colossal force and they’re a hitting squad that any team in the league would have a problem with.
Now it’s being reported that the side has moved on from the two players and is on the observant role in the market. Reports are coming in that they’re eyeing Magglio Ordonez, who is in the free agency at the moment. The veteran batter was part of the Detroit
Tigers lineup last season and after Jayson Werth’s acquisition, he’s picking up demand.
"Magglio is a guy that has gotten a lot of interest from a lot of teams now that Jayson (Werth) has signed," said Magglio’s agent, Scott Boras. "He's a middle of the (order) guy. He's had a great batting average, been a productive guy, he's a veteran player
and he's a winner. There are a lot of things about Magglio Ordonez where he fits a broad base of teams. Once Jayson signed, a lot of the teams interested in Jayson are now interested in Magglio."
It seems highly unlikely that the Red Sox would move in for Ordonez but in the world of baseball, anything can be deemed possible.
"He wants to be with a winning team, and I think the types of teams going after Magglio are those clubs," Boras said. "Obviously, you're not seeing a developmental club pursuing a guy like that. I fully expect he will end up with a team that's going to be
a contender."
Does that make sense? If one rates the Boston Red Sox, highly, then it probably does.
