Boston Red Sox add Mark Melancon to their bullpen – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-hander reliever Mark Melancon from Houston Astros for infielder Jed Lowrie and reliever Kyle Weiland in a deal that will ultimately assist the Red Sox to stay on top in 2012.
For many it was just another deal but for several baseball experts, who have stated during the 2011 regular season that the Red Sox are not going to win the World Series with this current roster, they rather have to include a good reliever who should provide
a strong backup to starting pitcher Jon Lester.
The Astros however, still believe that they have done a good job trading a player and in return they will reap the benefit from two very talented players. They also did not say anything that suggests that they are pleased now and did not regret anything
on losing a good and talented player like Melancon.
Later, the Astros’ manager Brad Mills commented in a conference call saying, “The more experience he was able to get gave him more confidence to go out and throw, we’ll have to assess the situation.”
One particular benefit the Astros know will get that they have made a good choice however, on which Jed Lowrie will be coming into the Astros. Lowrie is certainly a very good player and his consistent performance with the Red Sox last season is the main
reason why the Astros agreed to include him.
Recently Lowrie has also spoken in the media and told several reporters that he will continue playing with any team he gets the chance to play with. Lowrie said, “For me it's about playing, and that's always what I've wanted Hopefully, I get that opportunity
in Houston. I had a couple of years of playoff experience in Boston and I think it was an opportunity for me to learn what it is on the biggest stage in baseball, I want to bring that experience and that winning attitude and culture to Houston.”
Coming on to Mark Melancon’s arrival in the Red Sox that is highly anticipated at the moment, certainly weigh some logic for the Red Sox management who needed to fill a gap to lessen the burden from Jon Lester’s shoulders next season.
