Boston Red Sox battle past Washington Nationals 8-7 – MLB Spring Training
Boston Red Sox battled past Washington Nationals 8-7 at the Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, April 3 in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major league Baseball Spring Training Session.
Red Sox’s catcher Jason Repko ended his spring campaign with great style as he drove in the go ahead run in the ninth inning. He also threw out a runner at the plate to help his team take control of things. Considering his performance on Tuesday, Repko will have a great chance to break into Boston’s Opening Day roster.
"I worked hard and showed how I can help the team win, and it's in their hands, and I try not to spend too much time thinking about it," Repko said.
"He's absolutely been in the mix from the beginning, and today he gets the big hit in the game and in a big stadium makes a perfect throw," manager Bobby Valentine said. "He's only done everything we've asked him to do."
The right hander has played six big league seasons with the Twins and the Dodgers and he will be looking to make the most of available opportunities in 2012. The real concern for Repko this season will be his health and fitness. His 2011 MLB campaign was limited to only 67 games last season due to various forms of injuries. Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia made useful contributions with the bat with four hits, four RBI’s and four runs.
"I left a couple balls up in the zone with runners on base and they took advantage of it thanks to Dustin Pedroia -- he drove in most of the runs," said Nationals’ Edwin Jackson who allowed six runs and five hits.
The Red Sox improved their spring win-loss record to 16-11 with their win over the National on Tuesday. Showing great composure and fighting abilities, the Red Sox have shown no signs of nerves since the start of 2012 Spring Training. Manager Bobby Valentine will be very happy with what he has seen from his team so far this spring. However, it will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can upset other top American League teams during the regular season.
