Boston Red Sox beat New York Yankees, 7-5 – MLB Recap
Alex Rodriguez's error in the top of the seventh inning gave a chance to score the game-winning run, as the Boston Red Sox held on for a 7-5 victory over New York Yankees to complete a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium, New York, on Sunday, May 15.
David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit solo homers, while Kevin Youkilis hit a three-run homer for Boston, which registered their first sweep of New York since taking three consecutive from June 9-11, 2009 at Fenway.
Jon Lester allowed four runs on five hits in a six-inning start and struck out seven and walked four for the Red Sox, who is .500 for the first time this season.
Andruw Jones hit a solo homer while Curtis Granderson hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Yankees, who have dropped a season-high five straight contests.
Freddy Garcia gave up five runs and four earned on six hits over five innings in the losing effort.
The Yankees got the scoring of the game started in the first inning. Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout and crossed the plate on Mark Teixeira's base hit to centre.
Boston quickly knotted it in the second inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Jed Lowrie knocked in Youkilis with a sacrifice fly. Garcia made sure the Red Sox came away with just one run in the inning.
New York took 4-1 edge with a pair of homers in the home second. Jones led off with a homer to left-centre field. Later in the inning, Granderson drove in Russell Martin with a blast over the wall in right.
The Red Sox responded by equalising the game in the third inning. Jacoby Ellsbury doubled and Adrian Gonzalez walked to put men on first and second with one out. Youkilis rushed to the plate and smacked Garcia's offering over the wall in left for a 4-4 deadlock.
Ortiz snapped the 4-4 tie with a homer in the fifth inning. With two outs, Ortiz knocked the ball just inside the right-field foul pole.
The Red Sox went on top by 6-4 edge in the seventh inning. David Robertson walked Dustin Pedroia, who stole second. Gonzalez was then intentionally walked to put two men on with one out. Youkilis followed with a routine grounder to third base, but Rodriguez
let the ball go under his glove. Rodriguez's error gave time for Pedroia to cross the plate. Boston went on to load the bases, but Lowrie went down looking to end the inning.
The Yankees got a run back on Boston’s error in the home seventh. With Granderson on first and two outs, Alfredo Aceves allowed a double to Rodriguez. Carl Crawford bobbled the ball and Granderson took advantage on it to score. Daniel Bard was called upon
to get the last out of the inning.
Saltalamacchia supplied the Red Sox a capped the scoring with a homer in the eighth. With one out, Saltalamacchia drove Joba Chamberlain's offering over the wall in right for a 7-5 edge.
"I didn't hit it great, but I hit it luckily to the right part of the ballpark," Saltalamacchia said. "To sweep a division rival and gain a game, that's what we want."
Jonathan Papelbon tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save of the season.
