Boston Red Sox beat San Diego Padres 8-2 – MLB news
Boston Red Sox had a great time on the field as they secured a comfortable 8-2 win against the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, July 4 in the finale of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular
season.
Red Sox posted another wonderful performance in front of their home crowd to improve their record to 54-34 to consolidate their position at the top of the American League East Division standings table. The running season has turned out to be a brilliant
one for the Red Sox who have made full use of the available opportunities. New Manager John Farrell will be delighted with what he has seen from his men throughout this season but surely the Red Sox will be looking to continue the good work in their upcoming
games to reach the playoffs.
Starting pitcher Allen Webster played a big part in deciding the outcome of the clash as he allowed just five hits and two run in six solid innings to grab his first win of the season. Webster struck out four times, using his fastballs and sliders very effectively
to create all sorts of problems for the Padres’ batting lineup.
“He's been in the middle of this offense from Day 1 and continues to be so,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Pedroia, who raised his average to .325 by going 2 for 4.
“What we're seeing of late is he's starting to pull the ball,” Farrell said. “It's a byproduct of getting pitched in a little more because he's gotten so many hits the other way. We know that when either an offspeed pitch stays in the middle of the plate
or a fastball's in the inner part of the plate, he's always been a dead-pull hitter in those locations of pitches.”
Relief pitchers Andrew Bailey, Alex Wilson and Craig Breslow all made useful contributions as they combined to toss up three scoreless innings of relief to help their side on to their slim lead. Jacoby Ellsbury had a great game with the bat as he smacked
a solo home run in the eighth.
