Boston Red Sox beat Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 – MLB news
Boston Red Sox continued their marvellous form as they secured a comfortable 5-1 win against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, June 18 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball
regular season.
Red Sox had a horrible last season as they finished at the bottom of the American League East Division standings table. Following their horrific run, the management made some key moves including hiring new Manager John Farrell. It seems the changes the Red
Sox made are paying dividends as they Red Sox completed their 43rd win of the season on Tuesday to consolidate their position at the top of the AL East standings table. It will be interesting to see Farrell and his men can continue the good work to make it
to the playoffs.
Red Sox starting pitcher Alcides Aceves had a great time on the mound as he allowed just three hits and one run in five solid innings to grab his fourth win of the season. Aceves used his fastballs and sliders superbly to create all sorts of problems for
the Rays’ batting line-up. Relief pitchers Junichi Tazawa, Andrew Miller and Craig Breslow also made useful contributions to help the Red Sox hold on to their slim lead.
“If you really put the hours into it, from the time it was first scheduled until the last out today, that's a pretty long game,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.
“He's not a guy that reports to the clubhouse early to begin with and was a little delayed,” Farrell said. “He had plenty of time to get loose.”
“It was awesome. First time in the big leagues was really cool,” Ortiz said. “I tried to soak it in a little bit. It was a very cool experience. It was everything I thought it would be.”
Dustin Pedroia put Red Sox on the board with a sacrifice fly hit to centre in the first inning. David Ortiz also made his presence felt as he drove in back to back RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.
