Boston Red Sox beaten by Baltimore Orioles 6-9 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox continued their poor run as they lost to the Baltimore Orioles 6-9 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 22 in second game of their three match series.
Starting pitcher Aaron Cook paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he gave up nine hits and five runs in just over five innings. Relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves took the loss after he gave up three runs and three hits in just 0.2 innings.
Orioles’ starter Randy Wolf, on the other hand, pitched with great control and accuracy as he allowed just three runs in five solid innings to keep Boston on the defensive. Reliever Tommy Hunter grabbed the win after pitching the perfect 11th.
"At the end of the season, the teams that you see go into the playoffs pull out the extra-inning games," Boston's Cody Ross said. "We just haven't been able to do that this year."
"When you don't have the firepower for the big hit," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said, "the guys came up short."
Ryan Lavarnway singled to right in the first inning to put Red Sox on the board. Third baseman Danny Valencia made the most of scoring opportunities as he smacked a two run home-run to left in the fourth to level the score 3-3.
Cody Ross grounded into fielder’s choice to second and Scott Podsednik added a double to left centre in the eighth to take the game into the extra inning. However, the Orioles were too hot to handle on Saturday. Jim Thome drove in the tie breaking run in
the 12th to help Baltimore claim a deserving victory.
"The game is a weird game. That's what makes it so fun," Thome said. "You can be 0 for 5 and continue to be positive and keep battling and you get a big hit like that."
It was another disappointing performance by Bobby Valentine and company who are out of the playoff race. The biggest problem for the Red Sox this season has been their inability to win tight games. It will be interesting to see if they can learn from their
mistakes to turn things around in the next season.
