Boston Red Sox beaten by Oakland Athletics 3-5 – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox were beaten by Oakland Athletics 3-5 at the Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, May 1 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Athletics made an extremely aggressive start to the contest and they made their rivals pay for their large number of unforced errors. Yoenis Cespedes singled to the centre and Jemile Weeks ended his 0-for-12 slump in an emphatic fashion to score the first run for Oakland.
Both teams failed to score a run in the next two innings. Kurt Suzuki rose to the occasion as he combined with C Pennington and Weeks to give the Athletics a crucial 4-0 lead. Weeks looked very comfortable on the plate and he took complete advantage of Felix Doubront’s wild throws, helping Oakland get an impassable 5-0 lead in the fourth.
Manager Bobby Valentine and company fought back bravely in closing stages of the game but that did not prove to be enough as they Athletics levelled the series 1-1 after losing the opener 11-6. For the Red Sox, David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia, Cody Ross and Mike Aviles made valuable contributions in hitting department of the game.
"It's pretty cool," Parker said between grins. "I don't think it will set in until maybe tomorrow or when I'm fielding phone calls later tonight."
"As long as he throws the ball over the plate with his stuff, he's going to have some success," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "I don't want to say you worry, but you really want to see how a young pitcher like that handles his first time at Fenway Park and he handled it beautifully."
"He's been the master of the one-ball, two-strike count and tonight he was behind virtually ever hitter," Valentine said.
Red Sox’s starting pitcher Doubront took his first loss of the season after he allowed six hits and five runs as he threw five wild pitches. Boston will be hoping to make the most of available opportunities in the decisive finale to end the series on a positive note.
