Boston Red Sox beaten by Washington Nationals 3-4 at Fenway Park – MLB Update
Boston Red Sox were beaten by Washington Nationals 3-4 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday, June 13 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Manager Bobby Valentine and company will be very disappointed after suffering series sweep in front of their own home crowd.
The Nationals won the opening game quite comprehensively 7-4 and they looked extremely confident in second game to prevail in a closely fought contest.
In a game played on a very fighting note on Sunday evening, the Nationals once again held their nerves, beating their opponents in finer details of the game.
Losing three in a row, the Red Sox have now fallen six games behind the American League East Division leaders Tampa Bay Rays, sitting at the last place on the standings table.
It will be interesting to see if Valentine can inspire them to bounce back before the All Star Break.
"You have to talk to the hitters," Valentine said. "The game is simple: Throw it over the plate, call it a strike; don't throw it over the plate, call it a ball. Simple. That's all anyone asks. I know it's been going on for 100 years, and I'm not the first
one to say it, but this was a pretty lousy series."
"It's not right," Valentine further added. "Good umpires had a real bad series this series -- a real bad series -- and it went one way. There should be a review."
Dustin Pedroia had an excellent time on the plate as he grounded into fielder’s choice to second to help Boston level score at 1-1.
David Ortiz continued his marvellous form, hitting a mighty home run to right in the fourth inning to put his side 2-1 ahead.
Scott Podsednik also made the most of available opportunities to make the score 3-3 in the seventh but the Nationals were not ready to give up.
Roger Bernadina drove in a tie breaking run in the ninth to devastate the Red Sox. Nationals’ relief pitcher Tom Gorzelanny pitched a scoreless eighth inning to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash.
