Boston Red Sox believe in quality not quantity, says GM Ben Cherington – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox, who are preparing hard for the next season to outdo everyone in their division, are somehow facing some major problems in this offseason. Many baseball experts think that the Red Sox did not add many new players to their roster and in
the near future, this attitude of ignoring signing new players might hurt the big team in Boston.
However, the Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has a different perspective all-together. He thinks that Red Sox’s motto is not to sign too many players. In fact, he advocated for more quality players when compared to signing too many players.
He explained, “For every pitcher you acquire, there are five more that you try to acquire. If we do our jobs well, the high-impact pitcher isn’t necessarily someone that looks like a high-impact pitcher right now, Guys that are really good and really dependable,
those guys in free agency get paid a lot and they cost a lot in trades. Guys that have some imperfections, whether it’s a skill or durability or whatever reason, it’s actually one of the most fun parts of the job and trying to acquire that type of guy.”
Cherington’s comments seemed to emphasise on new players and more pitchers, as he has certainly short listed one or two players for the next season. These particular players are expected to be announced soon in the media.
Currently, the Red Sox 40-man roster has main pitchers including Alfredo Aceves along with Matt Albers, Scott Atchison, Andrew Bailey, Daniel Bard, Josh Beckett, Michael Bowden and Drake Britton, while two to three starters still can fulfill the gap.
Along with starters, relievers also have some huge chances to play in the Red Sox roster next season. Though, at the moment, no official news has come out for a potential arrival of a reliever in the franchise, no one actually knows what Cherington is going
to unveil in the upcoming few days. With the anticipation of any announcement at a peak, the Red Sox fans are all set for a thrilling next season.
