Boston Red Sox claw back from behind to defeat the Houston Astros 7-5 – MLB Update
The Houston Astros lost yet again at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas as the Boston Red Sox came from behind to defeat them 7-5 on Friday, July 1.
The bad spell for the Astros continued at home as they succumbed to a four-run lead in the seventh inning. The Astros were leading 5-1 at the end of the sixth inning and seemed hopeful of finally managing winning ways at home. However, a late scoring extravaganza
by the Red Sox in the seventh inning not only shattered these hopes but also handed them their 31st loss at home this season with only 14 home wins in the bag.
Boston started impressively, as they silenced the large crowd of fans at the facility with Marco Scutaro’s third home-run of the season distancing 376-feet. Scutaro’s hit was followed by a scoring famine for the Red Sox as they could only get something going
in the seventh inning after the first inning hit.
The Astros came out strong for this game riding on a 7-0 thumping of the Texas Rangers in their previous outing at the Minute Maid Park. They started with vigour and continued scoring from where they had left it against the Rangers. Michael Bourn scored
twice, first in the first inning and then in the second inning along with Carlos Corporan’s second inning run to swiftly inflict a two-run lead on the Red Sox at the end of the second inning.
Angel Sanchez and Clint Barmes then stood up for the Astros to add one run each in the fifth and sixth inning respectively and impose a four-run lead on the visitors with the game hastily approaching an end.
The Red Sox have been in brilliant form this season and a class act could have been expected from this closely knit unit. The act came at just the perfect time and could not have been better than this. The Red Sox scored six runs in the seventh inning and
left the Astros speechless. J.D. Drew scored the first of the seven runs followed by Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Josh Reddick, Drew Sutton, Darnell McDonald and Dustin Pedroia. The effort can rightly be termed as a true example of classic team-work on display.
The starting pitchers from both sides were not impressive. Tim Wakefield from the Red Sox was hammered with 11 hits and conceded five runs with no strike-outs. Bud Norris was out of sorts for the Astros as well. Although he received only four hits, but they
cost him four runs.
It was down to the relief pitchers to halt the scoring and Dan Wheeler of the Red Sox came out victorious, as he won his first game of the season. Sergio Escalona could not match his opposite number and lost it for the Astros in the end, leaking two crucial
runs.
The Red Sox lead the three-game series 1-0, with the second game scheduled for Saturday, July 2.
