Boston Red Sox could sign catcher Mike Napoli – MLB Update
Though this is still speculation but sources do claim that the Boston Red Sox are interested to give catcher Mike Napoli a fresh contract.
Red Sox have recently signed veteran designated hitter David Ortiz and now they are looking into Napoli’s free agency as well.
The former Texas Rangers' star who also possesses some large experience in Major League Baseball is a free agent with a potential heavy price tag.
The Rangers already denied any talks with Napoli. It is yet to confirm officially, but many Rangers close sources say that the Texas side is planning to make it official regarding Napoli’s future.
"He’s been a big part of this club for a couple of years and we’d like to have him back, But for the first move of the offseason to be effectively having him back at that number was not something we wanted to do right now. He may have declined (it),” General Manager Jon Daniels said earlier in the month as he talked about Napoli in detail.
He added, “I would imagine they'll be a good deal of interest in him out there. You've got to be OK with it either way and we didn't want to start the offseason making that investment at that dollar number."
Napoli is a good player and has been playing in the Rangers' franchise for the last couple of years.
During the 2012 Major League campaign, he finished with .227 hitting average along with 24 home-runs, 56 RBIs and .343 OBP.
Not only this year, but Napoli has also been showing a great and consistent run in the league.
He is currently sitting comfortable with his career .259 hitting average along with 146 home-runs, 380 RBIs and .356 OBP.
Some say the Rangers are reluctant as they want to add another two to three pitchers and having already a full-time catcher Luis Martinez, they might not re-sign Napoli.
On the other hand, Mike Napoli’s Major League experience and current playing averages will certainly help him in getting a new contract with any leading team if the Rangers do not want his services in the franchise anymore.
